February 2012 ChiangMAIL -NZ Cherries for Mary and Joseph

My sister’s husband passed away on the 11th December due to a long 14 year battle against a brain tumour.  Although expected it still came as a shock.  He had almost gone home a few times before but obviously at those times God was not finished with him yet. I don’t believe God wanted him to suffer but he definitely was able to use his faith and testimony to touch many.

So I hurriedly prepared to leave for NZ in time for the funeral with no idea of the journey I was to undertake.  I actually felt I was just what it must have been like for Mary and Joseph at Christmas time all those years ago. So as we celebrated our ‘hostel Christmas dinner’ early and arranged tickets (with amazing provision from God) and although there really wasn’t a lot to pack, it was the most organised I had ever felt for a trip so I left feeling very optimistic!!

Trouble ahead

A lovely friend came to see me off at the airport and wished me well.   I was due to arrive in NZ at 1pm on the Friday in time for the evening memorial service for Glenn.  I had quite a bit of time between my flights so I used that time to reflect on Glenn’s life and what I wanted to share at the celebration service.  It was nice to think back to some precious memories mostly from before he got sick.  We had some good times and he was a special person in my life.  I was feeling very relaxed but several times went to the information counter to explain I didn’t have my boarding pass yet…I spoke to about 3 people and they all told me to return to Gate D2.

Life has a funny way of finding you out…or should we say…God has a funny way of using what we have to offer.

Who would have thought that Andrew’s passion for renovating and seeing a building realize its potential would be of any use here in Thailand. After all we came to do language study and be hostel parents. But it seems we came at a strategic point in time to assist with the completion of the new hostel building project…now over 6 years in the making.

October 2011 ChiangMAIL: The monthly activities

Life isn’t all about riding elephants and eating yummy Thai food here in Thailand. Yes that’s part of it but when your development years are being lived far from home and you maybe even don’t know where your home is because you are a TCK (third culture kid) then life is full of unique challenges and opportunities. So it’s the weekly and monthly activities and events that we do as a hostel that builds community, fellowship and belonging as we live and grow together.
